Are you lonely on this Good Friday? Within only a few months, the world has completely changed. We are seeing healthcare systems overloaded, economic uncertainty and potential collapse, and an extreme quarantine that is unprecedented in history. The average person may live with others and have some human connection, but many are completely alone. The ones who are infected and experiencing severe symptoms are treated in a fully isolated environment away from everyone and everything that they know and love—sometimes to die alone.

Don’t forget to look up

Time is moving quickly. He gently tugged on the reins to pull the donkey forward, and they moved slowly toward the final home in the area. Mary’s body began to ache, and the pain washed over her with a greater intensity this time, and she breathed slowly and prayed. Joseph held her hand and gently lowered her to the ground to give her a moment to recover. The contractions were getting closer together, and time was not on their side. When Mary had gathered herself, Joseph stood and told her to wait while he checked with the last innkeeper about a room. This time, she insisted that she go too, and he didn’t argue. Mary hobbled beside her husband and tried to ignore the pain that was beginning to rise again.

Memorial Day

I don’t how many of you have known a fallen soldier personally. There is a bond like no other among the military families as they work and live alongside one another. The base was a wonderful place to live as a child. There were so many places within walking distance: a movie theater, a bowling alley, our school, and several parks. All the kids roamed the area safely and we were all close friends. During our stay here, our neighbors two houses down was a young family with a sweet young child and a beautiful Irish Setter. Every player from both past and present has understood the importance of protecting what that paw represents—their house and their home field in Tiger Country. Before any of the advertising campaigns began highlighting the pride and tradition for defending “Our House,” this paw had a significance of its own. Back in 1996, Lovett, a team from Atlanta and a huge rival for the Tigers, came here to play. One former Tiger from the class of 1998 was quoted in huge bold letters on the football page of the yearbook in a simple statement: “I hate Lovett,” quantifying the feelings that the Darlington players had for this team.
As was a tradition for their away games, the Lovett football players brought water from the Chattahoochee River that runs behind their school and poured it onto that Tiger paw as a symbol that they were bringing their home field here. Upon seeing this act, the Darlington coaches told the players what had occurred and created such a frenzy that they had to hold back several of the players from charging the field to defend their paw before the game even began. After calming down, the Tigers proceeded to defeat Lovett that night decisively 46-27. Incidentally, some of the seniors from that year had younger brothers that were destined to be a part of the magical 1998 team, and these young men had surely witnessed this event and relived it through the stories that circulated afterward. This event was just one more of the many elements that added to the bubbling undercurrent of the explosive championship ahead.
If you stroll along the edge of the bleachers at Chris Hunter Stadium today, you can almost smell the popcorn drifting through the air and feel the electricity building as your mind effortlessly conjures a sea of students and fans filing into their seats, some coming to socialize, but most with the intent of watching their beloved team. Memories surface of the familiar presence of smoke hanging over the stadium at game time that was a unique phenomenon created from the position of the concessions stand grill near the playing field. There is a palpable sense of pride that originates from the sacrifice of blood and sweat spilled by all the young men that have played at “The Lakeside.” Even though energy and pride have always existed among the players every year, something was different in 1998, something that was built on the backs of the teams before them. Something you could feel growing after each win. A hope. A sense of possibility. A dream. And a belief that anything was possible. Players and coaches would later describe it in different ways, and each would remember a moment when it all began to come together, but they would all agree that something unusual was driving them forward. So while our country grappled with President Bill Clinton’s upcoming impeachment and a home run contest consumed the baseball world, the seniors of this 1998 team would be able to boast that they had a 35-4 record for their last three years. They would complete their journey by playing their final game on a cold night only six days before Christmas in front of a crowd of over 6,000 people, most of whom willed them to lose, in a town far away from their small quiet home.

Pain Relief

Revelation 21:4

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Understanding why things happen is not always easy. I tried to touch on this in two novels, A Rose For Jonathan and Quiver. One of my characters in the first novel asks why things happen. Another character answers that they don't always understand it either. I think as a Christian sometimes we feel like we have to have all the answers, but we don't. I think being honest with someone who is hurting is much better. The Bible gives us a lot of insight into many things, but it doesn't answer everything. I don't think we can handle all the answers and it's not important to me to always know why anymore. I stand on the faith that no matter what, He will see me through.

Not long ago, I knew three families that each lost a small baby within only two weeks. I knew each family was hurting more than I could understand, but it was tough on me too. Not long after that, we had some friends who lost their 18-year-old daughter. Those moments didn’t just put me on my knees--they yanked me there. I was raw and torn by how to talk to them and help them through such a terrible time. In many ways, several of the family members ministered more to me than I did to them. I marveled at how the Grace of God enveloped them in their pain to allow enough space for them to each work through their grief one day at a time, and even one moment at a time. We cannot understand His plan or His way. The Bible clearly says in Isaiah 55:8 that His thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways. I like the New Living Translation of this verse the best. It says,

Spring is Coming!

Spring is such an exciting time. I remember when our children were in school, one of them had a teacher that had us gather “signs of spring” like a broken bird egg or a flower for them to bring to school. Our searching would lead on long walks while we looked around at the buds on the trees and many of the early blooming flowers. This year, I was out on a trail hiking with my husband when we came across this group of daffodils that someone had planted years ago. Nearby were the remnants of an old home that was now reduced to only a few stones. I wondered how long the flowers had been there and about the people who had planted them. My thoughts meandered through several stories that I created in my head about the family that had once lived there.

The Stress of Christmas

So many emotions flooded her young mind as she laid quietly in the dark. The commentator mentioned that of the 40 Billion that have served our country, only roughly 3600 have ever received this award. The man honored in the show that I happened to see was named Sargeant Sylvester Antolak. His actions in WWII helped our forces eventually take Rome, one of the first major Axis cities to fall. This man and his fellow soldiers were pinned down by the enemy fire behind a wall. Instead of staying where it was safe or trying to retreat, Sergeant Antolak ran right into a spray of enemy bullets, taking three large round hits over the 200 yards that he covered. Each time he was hit and knocked to the ground, he would pull himself up and then run toward the bullets again. Even with a shattered humerus in his right arm, he continued to carry his machine gun and shoot as he ran. He eventually led his group to overtake the enemy and secure that area. The soldiers with him reported that even the German soldiers were in awe of this young man’s actions as he refused to quit. Later that same day, Sergeant Antolak lost his life as he continued his heroic deeds pushing forward deep into the enemy territory.

Struggling for a Purpose

The end of fall sports seasons is near. He retired and didn’t wish to fly anymore, but many of the pilots he flew with became commercial airline pilots. Often when I’m flying, I wonder about the men and women who are in the cockpit and the rich history of their lives. One such man is a dear friend of ours and I’m pleased to introduce him as the next honoree in The People of The Ville series.

Spiritual Warfare and the Power of Prayer

The first book in the Angels and Demons Series is A Rose for Jonathan. Whether we lived in the suburbs of Washington D.C. or in the countryside of Tennessee, my parents had a plot somewhere near where we grew all manner of vegetables and the occasional watermelon vine. We also visited the “pick your own” farms and picked bushels of items like beans or strawberries on a regular basis throughout the different seasons. My mom’s favorite joke for strawberry picking was that the farm really needed to weigh us all before and after we picked because we ate so many as we filled our baskets. I can still remember the warm sunshine on my back and the red juice dripping down to my elbow as I stuffed one ripe berry after another into my mouth. There was nothing better at that moment…except for the car ride home when we would stop at a small gas station and grab a Yoo-hoo to drink.

Easter 2018

Easter. Looking up, he saw a small young freshman who had recently completed the opening football competition known as The Night of Champions and had finished in last place. Recognizing the frustration in the young man’s face and suspecting that he had come to say that he was going to quit football, Coach Green patiently waved him into his office and offered him a chair, hoping to convince him to stay. Instead of quitting, though, the freshman had come to see Coach Green to find out what he needed to do to get better, explaining that he was embarrassed by his performance at the recent competition. For the next few minutes, Coach Green outlined the simple but basic plan of the importance of nutrition while also explaining the level of commitment needed for the workouts as well. Flash forward to his senior year, the same young man walked up to Coach Green at the team meal after winning the State Championship game. He had not only improved enough to place in the top four at The Night of Champions that year but he was a starter on this historic 15-0 team. As he approached Coach Green, he held up a coke and smiled,

Inversion Hike: Can You Conquer the Valley?

Psalm 121: 1-2

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

My husband and I like to hike and we have been on many trails through the years. I’ve heard several people speak about their experiences on a mountaintop or a trail and how this proximity to nature inevitably produces the proverbial “mountaintop experience” of feeling closer to God. In life, these experiences don’t have to physically be on the top of a mountain; but as a hiker, my husband and I often speak of the spiritual experience we have as well as the physical one of conquering a difficult climb.

The People of the Ville: Bill Beam

With strong family ties to the area, our latest People of The Ville honoree gives us a look into the past of our great city. Bill Beam, Jr. and his family have a long residence in Louisville with family history dating back to 1798 when his fifth great-grandfather, Captain Peter Fontaine, whose property later became known as Fountain Ferry Park, arrived in Louisville. Bill also explained that this was not the earliest arrival to Kentucky and “many family members lived in Kentucky (primarily in Frankfort, Shelbyville and the Bardstown area) years before the state’s admission to the union in 1792”.

Thankful for M&Ms

1Thessalonians 5:18

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Thankful…for so much

Years ago, when my children were small, we used to have a “Thankful Tree”. The idea was not my own but borrowed from somewhere long before the internet was so large and ideas for such things were plentiful. If you’ve never heard of this, it’s simple. I would draw a large tree on paper (I used to get the end rolls from a newspaper office) and then tape the picture on a prominent wall in our home. I used colorful leaves cut from construction paper—enough for all six of us for every day in November. Every day, each of us would take one leaf and write on it something we were thankful for and then tape the leaf to the tree. By the end of the month, the tree would be full and the visual was excellent for the girls to see how much we could be thankful for instead of dwelling on what we didn’t have.

What Do You Have to Give?

I have been a football coach’s wife for years. For years, I have sat in wind, rain, snow, and heat. I have stood along the fence to allow my kids time to stretch their legs. Many years I spent in the stands cheering and crying alongside the other parents. Several times, I sat in a dark van along the parking lot with a sick child to try to catch glimpses of the struggle on the field. There are moments when I wanted to scream for joy and others when I felt anger well to the point of a near explosion. Whether it was a poor referee call or a comment from someone in the stands or maybe a rowdy group across the field, I was always a Tiger…or a Cyclone…and the last 15 years a tried and true Bearcat.

The past two years I elected to give the parents a break and time to enjoy their own young men and took my camera to the sidelines. I have enjoyed the fresh perspective and everyone was amazingly respectful. Most who know me well know that I took a rather hard hit last year and had a bruise that covered the inside of my thigh for weeks (I still have some pain from it). Last night, I watched our team fight and struggle…and eventually lose to end their season. We had an amazing year like we knew we would. The guys gave all that they had…

I remember a few years ago one team that was similar and very dedicated. When their season ended, several seniors placed their cleats on the Bearcat in center field and left them there to symbolize that they gave all that they had and left it all on the field. This stuck with me last night as I watched these young men fight. As I walked over to hear the speech after the game, I lifted my camera and shot pictures of the young men kneeling before their coach. I do this every time but this night was different. I clicked as many as I thought I needed and turned to walk toward my camera bag to pack up and leave. That’s when it happened…

There isn’t much that a 51-year-old woman can give a team to help them on their journey through the season. I gave up my husband to the hours of film and coaching, but I found that I had given something else that I had no idea would happen. I pulled my camera up one last time to try to capture the field but it wouldn’t turn on. The battery had failed…but the camera was dead too. This camera has clicked thousands of pictures through the years and I’m honored that it plowed through this season so well. Smiling, I packed it away and felt another layer of sadness and I thought about those cleats mid-field so many years ago. Part of me wanted to leave my camera there last night…I gave what I could…my husband…my time…and now my camera.

The 2017 Bearcat Football season has ended…but now we will see what these young men will accomplish in life. There seemed to be no answer medically and my symptoms only worsened over time. My weight was dropping and I was scary thin. I started cleaning out cluttered areas and even gave away some of my clothes, trying to make it easier for my family if I passed away. There was nothing she could do to help him as the soldiers took the nails…placed them on his palms and feet, and drove them through his skin, anchoring his body to the rough wooden cross. He screamed in agony as they lifted the heavy wooden beams and shoved the base into the hole with a jolt, sending fiery shots of pain throughout his body. She watched as he struggled to breathe because his body was stretched out, hanging by the nails that pulled at his flesh. Deep in the forest, a large campfire crackled and popped while the three young men relaxed and leaned back, each lost in his own thoughts while watching the last of the flames lick hungrily at the dry sticks. In the distance, they could hear the sound of water rushing over the rocks in the nearby creek, while a variety of insects began their nightly chorus. Trees swayed gently above their heads where the moon did it’s best to provide a small bit of light despite the dense leaves that permeated the woods surrounding their campsite. After a couple of hours of ribbing each other about the difficult hike, the fire began to burn low. The largest of them was a young man named Ben. His six foot two inch frame was almost as broad; and he had taken advantage of his size on the athletic field; but he was quiet and introspective most of the time. Ben came from a modest family and had had to work for as many of the 19 years of his life as he could remember.

New Year’s Resolutions

Christmas is only a few days away…the new year is coming. Sometimes you are on a spiritual “high” and thus on a mountaintop or on a spiritual “low” in a valley. I think that there are sometimes flat areas as well, like a long highway that seems to stretch on forever. On a mountaintop, it is much easier to worship and feel close to God, but in a valley, it could be argued the same is also true because you are reduced to a raw and deeply penetrating hurt from which you need God’s help to survive. Maybe it is during these two times that God has shown you amazing Grace and Mercy. I know he has for me.

What Are You Worth?

How do you measure your worth?

Is it in your possessions, your accomplishments, your job…maybe even in your church? I’m not saying this to be profound–it is just true. Besides the non-ending coverage on the upcoming election, it’s hard not to notice all the turmoil in every nation in every state in every town, and in many homes. As Christians, we are called to love one another and love the Lord our God more than anything. Showing love is getting harder as the persecutions increase against us. I heard a pastor say one time the battles are great but the victory is already won. That is a great comfort to me to know that Jesus has already won the battle for us. I encourage you today to love freely and pray for other Christians and for our nation. With the news full of stories on the upcoming election, it’s evident that many people are frustrated with where our country is headed. Pray for God’s hand on this.

Making Ends Meet and More

My husband and I were married for several years and thought we were unable to have children. We had nearly given up on having a baby when we purchased a larger home instead, but we still prayed for a miracle to be able to have a family. When God answered our prayers and blessed us with a pregnancy, we became convicted that I should stay home to take care of our new daughter when she arrived. This seemed to be a crazy idea since my husband was a teacher with a meager salary at the time and my salary was very good. We were so convicted, though, that we sold our home and found a much smaller and cheaper home that needed a lot of work. I remember my mother-in-law actually crying when she saw it because it was in such bad shape.
We bought the home and moved in and then began to tackle the endless painting and repairs that it needed. The yard was also in terrible shape and we spent countless hours on it as well. I remember the window panes inside the house were so dirty that they were dark gray and difficult to see through. Within a few weeks, we were able to scrub and sweat our way to the diamond that we always knew was underneath. We had a small amount of money in savings and my husband and I began to pray that it would last because we knew that even this house was going to challenge us. Our thought was that we would dip into savings only when necessary and try to make it last as long as we could. We hoped that we could make it until our daughter started school and I could then return to work.
About three months after moving into our small home, my husband came home to tell me that something amazing had happened. He was offered a new job that would provide us free housing as well. The job was at a high school that he had attended. A job like this was not even on our radar as a possibility, since he was teaching at a college at the time. We were so excited that we immediately put the house on the market.
To understand the next part of this story, you have to know this about me. I devoured any home magazine and TV show that I had time to read or watch and I yearned to have a home with curb appeal and every detail perfectly coordinated and planned. I spent hours working on these tasks in our first home and decided that a big house would be a perfect dream to work toward. When I found out we were going to get “free housing”, I envisioned a pretty little home on the campus with a nice yard for our daughter. I quickly found out that the “free housing” was not a house at all. Our house was an apartment in a dorm at the end of one of the halls on the third floor.
When my husband told me the news, I am pretty sure that he thought I would be upset; but I was thrilled. I, the house queen, who yearned for the dream home in magazines was actually happy to move into a dorm. I am not sure how but God changed me immediately. Not slowly or steadily but He instantly changed my heart to understand the gift He was giving us. My priorities were now my family and that has never changed since that time.
If this were the end of the story, it would be enough to pass along; but God wasn’t through yet. He had much more to show us. Not only did our house sell in two days, the lady that bought it had to rent it from us for a few months before completing the sale (more income for us) and the house sold for almost double what we had paid for it–even after the money we had spent to repair and fix it up.
We eventually lived in several other places around the school campus and I was always in awe of how wonderful they all were when in reality they were nowhere near the dream home that I was sure would bring me incredible joy. God took a girl who had always put a lot of value in things and curb appeal to a woman who found joy and happiness in a place to live and raise her family. The transformation in my heart was amazing. The years we spent at this school allowed me the time to eventually have four daughters (another miracle story for another day) and stay home with them as well.
If the story ended here, again, it would be amazing; but God was still not through. For several years, my husband’s career took us to other places without free housing and God was able to not only keep me home but increase our savings again and again. When we wrote out our budget, it made absolutely no sense that we could even make ends meet much less save money as well. So many times I felt like the woman in 1 Kings 17:16 with the oil and flour that was never exhausted. Several times we would need something and before we could even worry about it, someone would provide it or the item would simply last longer than it should have.
We have never felt the love and devotion of our Father more than we did during those days. He sustained us and then as an added bonus, he gave us more. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! He is with you always (Mathew 28:20).

When A Christian Hurts You

I know we have all been there…we trust someone and they let us down. I have had some of you writing to tell me of your experiences with similar problems. I can say that I do believe in the system, but it was terribly difficult to watch people we love endure the pain of being wronged and the justice system fail them. I was sitting with my husband and talking over the frustrations that we felt over this and other situations like it when I blurted out the idea for this book. He sat quietly and I wasn’t even sure he was listening until he looked up at me and said I should write the book. It was several months later when he brought it up to me again. I decided then that it was a worthy subject and started sketching out the characters and storyline. Within a few weeks, I had a shell for the story and set it aside. Over a two-year period, I would pick it up and maybe write a little; but I didn’t really start seriously finishing it until last year. Around the end of the summer, I completed the last draft.

How to commit the perfect murder?

The perfect murder. In the book, The Club, you will see how this might be possible…

As for the questions…I have one that I do want to go ahead and answer. I mentioned in a previous blog post that I had a character that I had originally allowed to die but couldn’t do it! I re-wrote it to allow this particular one to live on! It affected everything, including the ending. I have had several of you bugging me to know who it was. Pastor Sparks was on the edge for a while and I kept him, but the one that was brought back completely from the dead is…Martin! Or Jack! Yes, he became too important for the possibility of a sequel.

Join The Club: Membership lasts a lifetime…

So many funny comments from you all. In my log of ideas and story lines, I also have several chapters written for several different books that I have worked on developing through the years. My next novel, though, is completely inspired by some personal encounters that have changed me. I needed to write about them first. I will get back to the ideas and concepts that I have brewing; but this next book had to be written. More to come later. For now, please keep reading and asking questions. I will continue to answer you individually so as not to spoil the book for anyone. As for the Pastor Sparks comments from several of you–I am not sure about his future. It is heart wrenching to say the least. Having to live through a horrible experience is one thing; but reliving it over and again in preparation for a trial and then during a trial only to have the accused walk free is more than anyone should have to endure. So many cases never even go to trial. It is one person’s word against another in so many cases. The justice system is set up that one is innocent until proven guilty; but for a young girl who has been attacked, she is forever marked and sometimes even ridiculed. We lived it through a family member and it broke our hearts. This book was written as a result of dealing with the pain. Of course, I don’t condone acting out any sort of revenge; but the idea of what someone might be pushed to do did cross my mind, as we watched others work through the pain. What is deep inside of someone may only be released when they are ripped open to their core. I wish only healing to those who are hurting. Absolution. It is a difficult and wonderful word. When we can release what tethers us to pain, we are free. Mathew 6:14.

Domestic Violence Survivors: Charity Identified

Hey Everyone,

I have found a wonderful non profit organization that provides care packages and more for survivors of domestic violence. All the worry for my children and their future. What would I do if someone hurt my daughter? It is easy to use a knee-jerk reaction and say that I would “hunt them down like a rabid animal”; but in truth, I don’t want to go to jail for hurting someone. What good would that do? In my new novel, The Club, I give you the scenario of ordinary people relying on the justice system to take care of the wrong that has been done to their loved ones. When the justice system fails, these people feel helpless…until they are recruited. Crime doesn’t pay. Justice will prevail. The perfect murder can happen. For the first release, the book is in e-book form only due to the need to fully complete the final stages such as the acknowledgment page, etc. There are many levels to publishing a book, as I now know; and I hope to have a print version ready soon. It takes a little bit longer to set this up, but I am working hard to do so.
